Childhood Memories

“When I was 5-years old, I caused my mother and father to get a divorce.” Those were the words that came from the mouth of a new client struggling with a variety of relationship issues. She was 35-years old and she was still blaming herself for her parent’s divorce. She recounted how here daddy had taken her to get a haircut when she was 5-years old, and “he got it cut really short.” When she and her daddy got home, her mother was very angry, and a bad argument raged between her mother and daddy for a “very long time.” It was not long afterwards, as she remembers, that her parents divorced. The impression left in her mind as a little 5-year old girl persisted and was now even believed by her 35-year old, adult mind. The memory and the resulting negative view of herself were now adversely impacting her second marriage.
